Is it fun to work at 4 North? Why?

Absolutely. 4 North is a fun team that are experienced and take their roles very seriously. It is a great place to learn, work and also many opportunities for advancement.
How is the staffing ratio at 4 North?

4 North is well staffed with an average of 1:4 nurse patient ratio on day shift and 1:5 on nights.
How flexible is the schedule at 4 North?

It is a self-scheduling policy where staff schedule their own shifts on an eight week basis.
Are there opportunities for growth at 4 North?

Yes, there are many educational advancement opportunities that a staff can go into such as ACLS preceptorship, Telemetry educator, LVAD educator or join the many committees that have been established.
What are the committees at 4 North?

How extensive is the orientation program for new nurses?

The orientation program is a 6 week program where new staff are oriented on the floor with a preceptor.
  • 6 week 1:1 orientation with a preceptor.
  • 6 weeks same schedule as preceptor with your own patient load.
  • 4 months continuing education classes that help you specialize in cardio/thoracic nursing.


What is the role of a Charge Nurse? program for new nurses?

The CN is in charge of the smooth running of the floor and to organize the workflow including staffing issues and a resource person.
What other disciplinaries are involved in patient care? program for new nurses?

Preventive Cardiology, pharmacy, respiratory, case management, social work, dietary, PT/OT and others.
What is the heparin protocol? program for new nurses?

The heparin protocol is a pre-authorized heparin drip dosing and is available for reference in every nursing chart. The first initial dose has to be prescribed by the physician
What needs to be done to prepare for bedside cardioversion? program for new nurses?

Refer to the pre-printed checklist available at the nursing station. Basically the patient is to be NPO, good IV access with NS to KVO, crash cart and blood pressure machines at bedside including a continous pulse oximeter. Pre-medicate as ordered and document in sedation/analgesic pre-printed form. RT or anesthesiologist to be present during procedure with attending doctor.
Who is eligible to be a Charge Nurse? program for new nurses?

Any 4 North RN who is telemetry and ACLS certified and have gone through an orientation and completed a minimum of 6-9 months.
