We accept one fellow every other year. We are full for 2012-2014 but will be accepting applications for 2013-2015. As with most Fellowship Program, this is not an approved PGY–5 ACGME position. It is, however, affiliated with an ACGME accredited Ophthalmology Residency Program. Malpractice insurance will be provided by the University as well as medical, dental, and other benefits. After beginning this fellowship, you will attend a scheduled orientation to explain in detail all benefits you and your family are eligible to receive. This is a two-year position beginning July 1 through June 30 two years later.
This is a two-year retina fellowship at the John Moran Eye Center of the University of Utah. Four full-time retina faculty (Michael Teske, M.D., Paul Bernstein, M.D., Ph.D., M.E. Hartnett, MD, and Albert Vitale, M.D.) will provide extensive hands-on training in adult and pediatric vitreo-retinal surgery, medical retina, and posterior Uveitis at three busy teaching hospitals (Moran Eye Center, Salt Lake City VA, and Primary Children's Hospital). Ample opportunity and time will be provided for clinical and basic science research with the vitreo-retinal staff and with our world-renowned basic science research faculty. The fellow will also help organize the monthly fluorescein conferences and assist in resident and medical student teaching. Annual salary: $50,000, which includes VA supplementation.
If selected for this position, you will be required to obtain a Utah Physicians License, a Utah Controlled Substance Licence, and a DEA license. You will also be required to obtain privileges with the University Hospital, Primary Children's Medical Center, and Veterans Administration Medical Center. All fees for privileges will be reimbursed by the Department of Ophthalmology. University policy requires original receipts for reimbursement. We will work closely with you to meet these requirements.
You will also be required to sign a fellowship agreement. Included within this agreement is a covenant not to compete: “Upon termination or expiration of fellowship training/employment with University for any reason whatsoever, fellow agrees that for a period beginning with the date of termination and continuing for two full years thereafter, fellow shall not, either directly or indirectly, within Wasatch or Summit Counties; to include the entire Wasatch Front, engage in the practice of ophthalmology, either as an employee, individual, proprietorship, partner, shareholder, associate or consultant.“
