Photo of Mark D. Mifflin, M.D.Thank you for visiting our website. As Residency Director, I am delighted to invite you to learn more about our program. You will find information about an ophthalmology residency that is established as one of the top training programs in the country. Even so, we are not content to rest on our laurels, and we are constantly striving to improve.

A great training program starts from the top down. At Utah, we are privileged to have a visionary chairman who is truly devoted to the pursuit of excellence in education, clinical care, and research. Dr. Randall J Olson is an outstanding leader and is a great resident advocate.

The clinical faculty of the John Moran Eye Center are truly world-class and cover all subspecialty areas of ophthalmology. Residents are outnumbered by about a 3:1 ratio by full-time clinical faculty. Our clinician educators have very active practices and residents have access to all patients in our system. This is perhaps one of our greatest strengths. There are no distinctions between “resident” and “attending or private” patients. By necessity and design, there is a high level of supervision and teaching which allows this system to work.

Residents are our program’s greatest asset. Utah is known for a prolific clinical and surgical experience. Our approach is definitely “hands on” and this puts a great deal of responsibility on our resident housestaff. The John Moran Eye Center continues to grow and provide even more opportunities for physicians in training. In December of 2003, our residency was fully re-accredited by the ACGME and during this process a request for expansion to three residents per year was granted. In July of 2004 we will begin phasing in this expansion and we are confident this increase will only enhance the training experience. More research and elective time, as well as a more balanced rotation and call schedule are just a few of the benefits we expect from this change in our resident complement.

I invite interested parties to contact me with inquiries about our training programs. I also encourage direct communication with our current residents, faculty and staff. We hope to hear from you soon.
