Residency Program

Course # 7020–Department of Surgery Junior Clerkship/Ophthalmology Rotation

Prerequisite

Junior medical students. This elective is arranged through the Department of Surgery, Education Office. Students are provided an in-depth exposure to ophthalmology subspecialty surgical procedures, up-to-date surgical techniques and all clinical conferences.

Rotation

One week is spent at the John A. Moran Eye Center, Triage Clinic

  1. Patients are attended by on call residents, fellows and faculty
  2. Medical students observe and assist
  3. Types of patients seen are:
    • Walk-in emergency patients
    • Patients with cosmetic or intraocular surgery needs

One week is spent at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Ophthalmology Clinic

  1. Patients are attended by on call residents, fellows and faculty
  2. Medical students observe and assist
  3. Types of patients seen are:
    • Specialty clinic patients such as cornea, retina and neuro-ophthalmology
    • General ophthalmology patients
    • Patients with cosmetic or intraocular surgeries

Learning Objectives

Basic ophthalmology eye examinations, ophthalmology history, interesting ocular findings, and students are provided an in-depth exposure to ophthalmology subspecialty surgical procedures, up-to-date surgical techniques and all clinical conferences.

Testing

Testing to be proctored by the Ophthalmology’s Academic Office.

Evaluation Criteria

  1. Evaluations have been computerized and will be coordinated by the Ophthalmology’s Academic Office
  2. Evaluations will be completed by the resident or faculty on rotation with the medical student
  3. Evaluations are signed by Mark D. Mifflin, M.D., Director of Education
  4. Originals are sent to Surgery Education; copies are kept on file in the Ophthalmology’s Academic Office

Strongly Recomended

At least 3 hours work with General Ophthalmology by Vaughan and Asbury, 11th edition (2 copies on reserve in library) before starting elective, so that time will not be expended on rudimentary anatomy, physiology, etc.

Minimum of 2 weeks, maximum of 1 student
