Residency Program
Course # 7580–General Ophthalmology
Prerequisite
Senior medical students or Junior medical students doing their senior rotation.
Rotation
This two-week elective is available to students who did not participate in ophthalmology during the surgery junior clerkship rotation. Students will work directly with two residents and full-time faculty. They will be assigned one week at the VA Medical Center, Ophthalmology Clinic, one week at the John Moran Eye Center, Triage Clinic.
Learning Objectives
Medical student will observe patients with emphasis on developing examination skills, e.g. ophthalmoscopy, and emphasis on developing knowledge about common disease entities, e.g. glaucoma, cataract, retinopathies. Students will be involved in all teaching conferences. This is an excellent opportunity for maximal ophthalmology exposure for the student, especially if interested in pursuing a career in ophthalmology.
Testing
Testing to be proctored by the Ophthalmology’s Academic Office.
Evaluation Criteria
- Evaluations have been computerized and will be coordinated by the Ophthalmology’s Academic Office
- Evaluations will be completed by the resident or faculty on rotation with the medical student
- Evaluations are signed by Mark D. Mifflin, M.D., Director of Education
- Originals are sent to Margie Thompson, Student Affairs; copies are kept on file in the Ophthalmology’ss Academic Office
Strongly Recomended
At least 3 hours work with General Ophthalmology by Vaughan and Asbury, 11th edition (2 copies on reserve in library) before starting elective, so that time will not be expended on rudimentary anatomy, physiology, etc.
Minimum of 2 weeks, maximum of 2 students
