Course # 7600 - Clinical Preceptorship in Ophthalmology

Course Description

This 4-week rotation is designed for medical students who are seriously pursuing a career in ophthalmology. Students will work with two different full-time faculty preceptors, generally in 2-week blocks. Direct patient care opportunities will be provided in clinic and/or surgery, covering a broad range of comprehensive and/or subspecialty ophthalmology. Course requirements include a Grand Rounds presentation, a formal written exam, and microsurgical practice and evaluation. Clinical research opportunities are available in some cases, but this is an optional component of the course. Students are encouraged to take buddy call with residents during the rotation. Please note that this course is only offered June through September, and only 4 students per month are accepted. Application deadline is April 1st.

  5. Non-refundable $100 fee (to be paid to Student Affairs after application has been approved)

A committee will review applications and qualified selected applicants will be notified by May 1st, or on a case by case basis after this deadline. After selection of the applicant by the committee, Ms. Doxon will formalize the rotation through the student affairs office.

Evaluation Criteria

Evaluations will be completed according to the requirements of the student's medical school. Faculty preceptors and residents will evaluate the student and the formal evaluation will be reviewed and approved by the Residency and Education Director of the John A. Moran Eye Center.
