ABOUT QUICKTIME

QuickTime and its web browser Plug-in are one of the most popular and successful ways to play digital video and interactive events on your computer. It is an add-on to your World Wide Web browser and is available for both the Macintosh and Windows computer platforms.

The latest version of QuickTime is available directly as a FREE download over the Internet (although there is a "professional" version available as a $30 upgrade). The version of QuickTime you need must be 4.1.2 or greater.

Regardless of which version you may already have installed on your computer, we strongly recommend that you install the latest version of QuickTime. No harm will be done if you are installing on top of a previous version. The installation is self-configuring and only asks you to select a few options along the way.

INSTALLATION CHOICES FOR QUICKTIME:

You have several choices in getting and installing QuickTime for your computer (see the chart below).

• GET IT FROM THE INTERNET (WWW): Install QuickTime and its web browser plug-in from the download web site at Apple, Inc. This takes a little time, particularly if you have a slow connection to the Internet. However, a direct Internet download insures you are getting the most recent version of QuickTime.
• STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS: We give you step-by-step instructions that explain how to install and configure QuickTime from Apple's Internet site.
  
• TEST PLUGIN: To make sure your QuickTime plugin works, we've given you a web site in which you can try out various streaming and progressive download QuickTime movies.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

The following instructions will show you how to:

• DETERMINE EXISTING VERSION Determine if you have QuickTime installed on your Windows-based computer what version it is.
• UPDATE EXISTING VERSION Instructions for updating your QuickTime to the latest version.
• DOWNLOAD NEW VERSION Instructions for downloading a completely new version of QuickTime if you don't have it.
• TEST PLUGIN See if your newly installed plugin actually works!

DETERMINE IF YOU ALREADY HAVE QUICKTIME AND WHAT VERSION IT IS

The follow instructions will help you determine if you already have QuickTime installed on your computer and what version you have.

Windows computers do not come with QuickTime pre-installed. It must be downloaded and installed from Apple's web site. Sometimes it is installed as part of some other software program or game you purchased. If you want to determine if you have QuickTime and what version you are running, follow these directions:

• From the TASK BAR of your Windows computer, click the START BUTTON and select the menu option called SETTINGS.
• Under SETTINGS, choose CONTROL PANELS. A window will open and display the Control Panels for your computer.
• In the CONTROL PANELS window, look for the Control Panel labeled QUICKTIME.
  • If the Control Panel for QuickTime is NOT there, use our DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS.
  • If QuickTime is present, here is how you find out what version you have...
• Double-click the QUICKTIME CONTROL PANEL to open it. A window will open entitled QUICKTIME SETTINGS.
• In the QUICKTIME SETTINGS window, select "About QuickTime" from the pull-down list. From the information displayed on your screen determine what version of QuickTime you have. If it is less than 4.1.2, use our UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS.

UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS FOR AN EXISTING VERSION OF QUICKTIME

If you already have QuickTime on your Windows-based computer, follow these instructions to conduct a quick update to the latest version.

There is a utility that comes with QuickTime called the QUICKTIME UPDATER. If you are connected to the Internet, it will automatically help you update your installed version of QuickTime to the latest one. Follow these steps:

• The typical install for QuickTime on a Windows-based computer places the QuickTime Player in your PROGRAMS FOLDER. From the TASK BAR, click on START>PROGRAMS>QUICKTIME.
• From the handful of choices that are revealed, select the application called QUICKTIME UPDATER.
• Once the QuickTime Updater is launched, follow all the on-screen instructions and you are finished.

DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS TO INSTALL A COMPLETELY NEW VERSION OF QUICKTIME

You must be using QuickTime 4.1.2 or greater to take advantage of the media files you will encounter in LearningSpace. Follow these instructions to download and install a complete version of QuickTime for your Windows-based computer.

DOWNLOAD QUICKTIME

With your Internet browser, go to the web address (URL) http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download. Ignore all the enticements to download the professional version. Instead, to download the free version scroll down to the section in which you enter your vital statistics and your computer platform. After entering your data and making your selections, click on the DOWNLOAD QUICKTIME button.

The various components which make up QuickTime will be downloaded.

Along the way, you may encounter several windows asking you to make certain decisions about the download and installation.

• One of these windows asks if you wish to conduct your installation DIRECTLY from the Apple web site. If you choose this option, the installation process begins immediately.
• If you choose the option to DOWNLOAD the installer onto your hard drive first, you must wait for the download, then find the QuickTime Installer program on your hard drive and run it manually. We often prefer the first option in which you run the installation directly from the Apple web site.

NOTE: Sometimes there is a 30 second lag time on any Windows based computer before the installation wizard begins to operate. Be patient and let things happen automatically for you. Avoid random screen clicking if nothing seems to be happening.

• Once the installation program is running, respond to any questions or options it gives you. If asked for a registration number, just ignore that page and go on to the next. All components of QuickTime, the QuickTime Player, and the latest PLUG-IN for your web browser will automatically be installed, requiring no further action on your part.
• You may need to restart your computer so your Windows Operating System will recognize all of QuickTime's components.

With QuickTime properly loaded, whenever the ymposium site or your web browser encounters a QuickTime based media file, it will open and play for you.
