Dr. Bala Ambati invited to join Entrepreneurial Faculty Scholars
Moran's own Dr.Bala Ambati was recently invited to join the Entrepreneurial Faculty Scholars (EFS) that is made up of the University of Utah's branch of the Community of Faculty Entrepreneurs (CFE). Dr. Ambati was selected for his outstanding contributions to the development of medical devices and research.
The Community of Faculty Entrepreneurs (CFE) at the University of Utah focuses on promoting and expanding business innovations by helping others overcome the difficulties that arise when starting a new company. The CFE is led by Glenn Prestwich, Presidential Special Assistant for Faculty Entrepreneurs, and Ronald Weiss, Technology Venture Development's Faculty Outreach representative.
Dr. Ambati's contributions to business innovation and research were recognized during the 2010 Utah Innovation Awards, where his university startup company iVeena, was a finalist in the medical devices category. One of the surgical instruments he developed, the Ambati Phaco Tip, will be featured in Cutting Edge: What's New in Cataract Surgery at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) later this year. Dr. Ambati was also nominated as Business Professional of the Year for 2010 by the Utah Asian Chamber of Commerce.
The Entrepreneurial Faculty Advisors (EFA) was launched in November of 2007 as a three year pilot program. The ultimate goal was to have members of the University's faculty who have a strong background in entrepreneurship, innovation and business to be advisors for members of the University and community who are looking to expand their own innovational efforts.
For future endeavors, the CFE and the EFS are hoping to make a bigger impact on the academic community by creating a new award, the Distinguished Innovation and Impact Award, to motivate others to make an impact on innovation advancement at the University of Utah. There are also plans to hold an entrepreneurship boot camp.
