Randall J. Olson, the John A. Moran, Director of the John A. Moran Eye Center and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Utah, recently received the Fifth Sir Harold Ridley Distinguished Visiting Professorship for Creativity and Innovation in Ophthalmology. The event was hosted by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center's Hamilton Eye Institute.

The Ridley Distinguished Visiting Professorship was established in 2001 by Jerre Freeman, MD, and the Ridley Medal is presented annually to ophthalmologists who have demonstrated "creativity, innovation, perseverance and productivity" in their field. Dr. Olson's address at the event, "How Can We Make People See Like Mother Nature Intended?" was both captivating and thoughtful.

After completing his undergraduate training and medical school at the University of Utah (BA '70, MD '73), Dr. Olson completed his residency at UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute in 1977. He went on to complete fellowships in cornea and external disease at the University of Florida in Gainesville and at the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans, where he joined the faculty in 1977 as director of corneal services.

The author of more than 300 professional publications and a worldwide lecturer, Dr. Olson specializes in research dealing with intraocular lens complications, teleophthalmology and corneal transplantation techniques. He was selected as one of the 15 best cataract surgeons in the United States in a peer survey conducted by Ophthalmology Times and one of 50 international opinion leaders in cataract or refractive surgery by Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today. He has appeared in the last three editions of Best Doctors in America.
