PRESS RELEASE
Moran Researcher, Dr. Bryan Jones receives prestigious Research to Prevent Blindness Career Development Award
Salt Lake City, Utah. February 13, 2007. For Immediate Release.
John A. Moran Eye Center Researcher, Brian Jones, Ph.D. was recently awarded the prestigious Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) Career Development Award. This award is designed to support promising junior ophthalmology faculty. Dr. Jones is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of Utah.
Dr. Jones' research in the laboratory of Dr. Robert Marc has been critical to understanding the nature and extent of pathology seen in retinal degenerative diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration, now known as retinal remodeling.
Dr. Jones said, I hope to be able to honor this award and its intent with some exciting new work over the next few years that will help to mitigate blinding diseases and possibly better inform vision rescue strategies.
Dr. Randall Olson, CEO of the Moran Eye Center and Chair of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, said this: In his young career, Dr. Jones has already discovered important information that illuminates the process of degenerative eye diseases. A clear indication of his contribution to this science can be seen as other scientists gain insights into their own research as a result of Dr. Jones excellent work. This RPB Career Development Award is a major jump start for many brilliant new research scientists in this field. We are truly grateful for their support.
The RPB Research Career Development Award Fund was established in 1990 to attract young physicians and basic scientists to eye research. To date, the program has recruited 126 vision scientists to research positions in departments of ophthalmology at universities across the country. RPB is the world's leading voluntary organization supporting eye research. Since it was founded in 1960, RPB has channeled hundreds of millions of dollars to medical institutions for research into the causes, treatment and prevention of blinding eye diseases.
