Band Keratopathy

Up

This entity is characterized clinically by a band of brownish-staining material in the anterior cornea within the palpebral fissure(#21927).  This is thought to be caused by chronic inflammation of the eye, as well as systemic disorders of calcium and phosphate.  Pathologically, this entity is characterized by an intense calcification located underneath the epithelium along Bowman's layer and often involving the anterior stroma (#21928).  Special stains are necessary to confirm the presence of calcium.  This is often associated with a pannus formation.
