Fuch's Endothelial Dystrophy

Up

This entity is thought to be a degenerative process that occurs in older women and has endothelial dysfunction.  Because endothelial cells are functioning poorly and are decreased in number, edema develops, first involving the stroma and then involving the epithelium(#21962).  Epithelial bullae may rupture causing recurrent episodes of pain.  Histopathologically, this entity is characterized by multiple wart-like excrescences on Descemet's membrane which are called guttata (#21964).  In addition, there is a progressive loss of endothelial cells as well as a thickening of Descemet's membrane in this entity (#21965).
