Molluscum Contagiosum

Up

This entity is characterized by multiple raised skin nodules with umbilicated centers thought to be caused by molluscum virus (a pox virus) (#21825).  The pathology consists of an epithelium which is acanthotic or thickened with an umbilicated center (#21826).

Affected epithelial cells contain characteristic "molluscum bodies" which are eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions composed of virus (#21827).  These inclusions are initially small in the deeper layers of the epithelium but increase in size near the surface of the lesion, occupying the entire cytoplasm of the cell.
