Seborrheic Keratosis

Up

Clinically, these lesions are characterized by elevated, irregular lesions which often have a crusted or greasy appearance (#21841).  In addition, these lesions may be somewhat pigmented.  Histologically, seborrheic keratosis is characterized by marked benign proliferation of epithelial cells causing a large degree of acanthosis.  In addition, the epithelium shows a tremendous hyperkeratosis or proliferation of keratin with multiple keratin-filled cysts (#21843).  The epithelium may also show signs of increased pigmentation, especially in the basilar cell layer.  There are no dysplastic changes noted in the epithelium.
