Drusen

Up

Optic nerve head drusen are seen clinically as whitish-yellow irregularities on the surface of the optic disc or deeper within the disc tissue causing an irregularity to the disc, which may be mistaken for papilledema (#22084).  Histopathologically, drusen are seen as dark collections of material in the optic nerve head anterior to the lamina cribosa.  This material is acellular and stains darkly basophilic.  In addition, these lesions may also be calcified.  Drusen also stain positive for acid mucopolysaccharides.

-Other views of drusen can be seen in the following slides (#41099, #41100, #41102, #41103 [auto-flares], #41104).
