LASIK and More

What is LASIK?

If you are one of the 70 million people currently diagnosed with myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, or combinations of these conditions, you have probably heard of a revolutionary technique in vision correction, LASIK. LASIK or Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis involves the process of reshaping the cornea by using a laser to effectively treat vision problems. As a result of LASIK treatment, many patients have found their vision restored up to or better than 20/20!

How it works: LASIK is a two step process. First a thin flap is made on the outermost layer of the cornea using a laser, referred to as Intralase. The next step is the correction with the Excimer Laser applied to the cornea. The length of time required for treatment will depend on the level of your refractive error or prescription. What makes LASIK such an appealing option for those candidates who qualify for the procedure, is that it is relatively pain free with a quick recovery time. The next day, most patients are able to drive themselves to their one day, post-operative appointment unaided by glasses or their old contact lenses. In fact, we actually provide a container for donation of your old glasses. It's a kind of LASIK tradition!

Who can benefit: LASIK, just as any other surgical corrective procedure, is not for everyone. LASIK candidates must fall within established parameters for refractive error, corneal thickness and pupil size. The Moran Eye Center corneal specialists are qualified to help you determine if LASIK, or any number of other procedures, is best for you. We are happy to schedule either a free seminar, offered in the community on an almost weekly basis, or a 2-1/2 hour free dilated eye exam.
