Inpatient Care | Burn Trauma ICU

Burn Trauma ICU Staffing Plan

  • The Burn Trauma ICU will be staffed with Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Health Care Assistants and a Health Unit Coordinator.

  • Each shift should be minimally staffed with 4 Registered Nurses, 1 LPN, 1 HUC and 1 HCA, according to average daily census.

  • Staffing numbers will be flexed up or down according to current census and acuity. Per Diem, overtime, or resource staffing is called in for higher census and acuity. Staff float to other ICU's in the case of low census in the Burn Unit.

  • Average daily census and average acuity would require basic staffing as follows:

Shift RN LPN HCA HUC Wound Care
0700-1900
5

1.5
.66
1900-0700

  • Staffing is evaluated on a shift by shift basis according to patient census and acuity and staffing is flexed up or down according to patient need.

  • The charge nurse evaluates staffing, both current and for the next shift and communicates needs or excess staffing to the clinical house supervisor. The CHS will determine whether resource staff or "float" staff is available and communicates with the Charge Nurse, who will then determine whether staff need to be called in or called off.

  • It is expected that all staff adhere to the schedule as posted, and assure appropriate communication when needing time off/sick calls, etc. per unit policy.
