Centers of Excellence in Women's Health.....what are they?
In 1996, the National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health were founded by the Office on Women's
Health in the Department of Health and Human Services across the country to coordinate and provide
innovative health care of all women across the lifespan in Academic Care Centers. The purpose was
to link academic programs across medical specialties and disciplines to improve clinical care for women,
promote research in women's health issues, improve education for health care providers, encourage programs to serve the under served, and promote women to leadership positions in
Academic Health Centers.
This federal program ended in September 2007, but the University of Utah maintains
a Center of Excellence in Women's Health to further enhance the status of women's health in Utah.
The original program included National Community Centers of Excellence in Women's
Health (CCOE) with similar goals of
providing up-to-date, integrated, coordinated, multidisciplinary health care in communities, and
also National Rural Frontier Women's Health Coordinating Centers
(RFCC).
See Map of CoE, CCoE, and RFCC.
