Emma Eccles Jones Medical Sciences Building

The lack of adequate academic research facilities on the Health Sciences campus is currently a major obstacle to continued excellence in the research endeavor of the School of Medicine. Since 1990, there has been a deficit of as much as 250,000 net square feet of academic research space, resulting in serious negative effects on faculty morale, the inability to support interdisciplinary collaboration, and the inability of the School of Medicine to meet and improve the established quality and reputation of their research effort.

In response to this need, the Legislature approved a $25 million academic research building of approximately 125,000 square feet as a non-state funded project. The building is currently in the design phase. Construction will begin in Spring of 2003 with completion expected around March 2005.

The building will house multiple research programs, including biochemistry and pathology. It will eventually provide space for 30 P.I.'s and their research teams. The new facility will be located in the southeast area of the Health Sciences Center campus, directly east of the South Parking Terrace.
