Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA)

Whole Body Image

The CPNR owns and operates a new Hologic Discovery DXA scanner. It is a flat-bed, mobile-arm scanner that uses fan-beam technology. DXA produces areal images and analyzes:

  • Bone Mineral Content (BMC)

  • Bone Mineral Density (BMD)

  • Body Composition, Whole Body and Subregion Analysis available

The Hologic Discovery DXA is capable of producing the following scan types:

  • Whole Body, Adult and Pediatric modes

  • A/P Lumbar Spine

  • Supine Lateral Lumbar Spine Pair

  • Hip

  • Forearm

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Total Scan Time: 2.5 minutes for whole body, 30 seconds for forearm, 10 seconds for all others

  • Exposure for whole body scan: 0.26 mrem

  • Exposure for AP Lumbar Spine: 0.40 mrem

  • Exposure for Lateral Spine: 0.20 mrem

  • Exposure for Hip Scan: 0.13 mrem

  • Exposure for Forearm Scan: 0.005 mrem
