Most of Utah's 2.3 million residents live along the base of the Wasatch Mountains-a 90-mile strip called the Wasatch Front-with Salt Lake City and the University of Utah located in the middle.

The Salt Lake City area is a progressive urban and industrial center with a population of nearly one million. The area offers unparalleled combination of recreational and cultural opportunities. There is a variety of performing arts and sports events. Alpine forests, streams and lakes, and red-rock deserts are easily reached.

Utah ski resorts are world-famous for their powder snow and Thanksgiving-to-May seasons. Eleven of the state's 14 ski resorts are within a one-hour drive of the University of Utah. Three of the state's resorts were selected as venues for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Nine national parks are within an easy day's drive of the University of Utah: Arches, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Zion, Yellowstone, Great Basin, Grand Teton and Grand Canyon. In addition, eight national monuments/historic sites are located within the state.
