Emergency Department
Unit Description
University of Utah Hospital Emergency Department (ED) provides emergency
service to all patients who present for evaluation and treatment,
regardless of age, complaint, or ability to pay. Services provided
include care across the continuum, from the severely ill or injured, to
those with minor problems. Specially trained staff and resources are
available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to evaluate and treat
all disease processes.
Annual Census
During the past 12 months, over 36,000 patients were seen and treated,
with patient volume steadily increasing each year.
Capacity
Currently we are operating with 27 beds, 6 of them are "Fast Track"
which allows less critically acute patients faster service.
Adjacent to the ED we have an Obersevation Unit (EDOU) with 11 additional beds.
Area/Programs Served
This ED serves the surrounding communities, as well as serving as a referral
center for a 5-state region.
We also serve as the emergency services component of the following:
- American College of Surgeon's verified Level I trauma center
- American College of Surgeon's verified Burn Center
- Hazardous materials response center
- Medical control for the AirMed flight program
- Medical control for the Summit County EMS agencies
Case Mix
- High acuity population (approximately 80% of our population is urgent or emergent)
- Approximately 20% of patients seen in the ED are admitted to the hospital
- 25% trauma
- 10% psychiatric
- Minimal pediatrics
- Large volume of acutely ill medical patients
- Large volume of orthopedics, neurology, neurosurgery, Ob/Gyn
