How can we help you?


Spill

Fill out our online form. You'll be asked to provide your name, department, phone extension, and a description of the problem, along with the location of the spill. Between 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM, call 1-2253.

Hazardous Spill

  1. Isolate the area to prevent personnel exposure and spreading of the material.
  2. Notify your supervisor.
  3. Notify us by using our online form.
  4. During day shift: Contact Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) at 1-6590.
  5. After hours: If it's a chemo spill, call 1-2253 or page 339-6979. If it's another type of hazardous spill, call the University Campus Police at 5-2677.

Hazardous Spill containment, cleanup and disposal in UUHC laboratories is the sole responsibility of the laboratory staff at the direction of its principal investigator and in coordination with the Environmental Health and Safety Department (1-6590). Those areas at risk from chemotheraputic exposure may acquire a spill kit from Stores (1-2013 or 1-2479).

Hazardous Materials In Container

For chemotherapy waste, fill out our online form. For other materials, contact the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) department at 1-6590. After hours, call 1-2253.

Sharps Containers

Fill out our online form to provide us with the details. Please be sure to include the number of sharps containers needed. Between 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM, call 1-2253.

Linen Delivery

Please enter the needed items into our online form, along with your name, the name of your department, and the location where the linen is to be delivered. Between 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM, call 1-2283.

Please tell us the location of the recycle bin using our online form. Between 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM, call 1-2253.

Lost & Found

The lost and found is in the Linen Services deparment, and can be accessed through the linen service window on the A Level of the hospital, close to the A elevators. The window is open from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with the following exceptions:

  1. The window is closed a 15 minute break starting at 9:00 AM.
  2. The window is closed for lunch from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
  3. The window is closed a 15 minute break starting at 2:00 PM.
You can come down to the window, or you could call Linen Services at 1-2816. Or if you prefer, you can use our online form to tell us what was lost, and we'll get back to you as soon as someone is available.

Lab Coats

Lab coats are handled by the Linen Services deparment, which can be accessed through the linen service window on the A Level of the hospital, close to the A elevators. The window is open from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with the following exceptions:

  1. The window is closed a 15 minute break starting at 9:00 AM.
  2. The window is closed for lunch from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
  3. The window is closed a 15 minute break starting at 2:00 PM.

Scrubs

Dan Urry in the Linen Services area keeps track of which sizes of scrubs are assigned to all the scrub lockers in the hospital. If you need to change the size of scrubs delivered to your scrub locker, you can send a GroupWise message to Dan Urry, or you could use our online form. Dan is in the office on regular work days (M-F except holidays) from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

Carpet/Upholstery Cleaning

Please use our online form to send us the location of the carpet/upholstery to be cleaned. Please remember to specify whether we should do the cleaning during the day or after hours. We'll contact you to make arrangements. If there's an urgent need for carpet or upholstery cleaning between 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM, call 1-2253.

Strip & Wax Floor

We need some time to plan for the stripping and waxing of a floor. Please use our online form to send us the location of the floor to be refinished, and we'll contact you to make arrangements.

Pest Control

Please use our online form to send us the details. We handle pest control only within the hospital, in building 525, but not in the School of Medicine (SOM). If you're in an area outside building 525, you need to contact your building manager.

Unlocking Doors

Our personnel are not authorized to unlock any door for anyone. Requests for unlocking doors should be directed to the hospital security office, 1-2294.

Complaint

If you have a complaint about your service, please accept our apologies. We invite you to use our online form to send us the details. If you send your complaint between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM on normal business days (M-F except holidays), a help desk coordinator will immediately receive the details. Otherwise, please wait until after 7:00 AM the following business day for a response.

Plumbing

The plumbers are in Facilities & Engineering, which can be reached at 1-2241. If there's water to be cleaned up, please report this as a spill.

Pneumatic Tube Transport System

Note: Always adhere to Body Substance Precautions and use appropriate protective equipment, e.g. gloves, when handling carriers that may be contaminated.

  1. Stop sending carriers from the station where the contamination was first noticed and initiate EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN from your station (if available at your station).
  2. Call BioMed (1-2241); if no answer, dial 1-2121 to page.
  3. Notify BioMed and provide the following information:
    1. Receiving station's number
    2. Sending station's number (if known)
    3. Type of spiill (specimen type and suspected amount)
    4. Time the contaminated carrier arrived (or was first noticed)
    5. Number of contaminated carriers that have arrived
  4. Notify the Clinical Hospital Supervisors (339-7379/X5-2713) of system spill.
  5. Follow the Decontamination Procedure in the University of Utah and Clinics Policy Manual. (See the Pneumatic Tube Transport System section of the Policy Manual for details.)
  6. Remove contents of carrier using protective clothing such as gloves, etc. (utilizing Body Substance Precautions).
  7. For all speciments other than Blood or Blood components, discard the specimen containment bag or pouch (if unable to be cleaned or salvaged) into a trash container suitable for biohazard waste.
  8. Call the sending station and request another specimen.
  9. For Blood and Blood Components: Do not discard these specimens on the patient care unit. Place specimen into another biohazard bag and physically return this to the Blood Bank.
  10. BioMed is responsible for decontamination of the system and will return the system to service when cleaning is completed.
  11. For any spills outside the station (i.e., carpet cleaning), treat it like a spill or shampoo request.
