Birth and Death Certificates

Birth Certificates

A person uses a birth certificate to prove age, parentage and citizenship.  A birth record is a statement of facts concerning an individual. It is a permanent legal record. Birth certificates are needed for:

  • entrance to school
  • voter registration
  • obtaining a driver's license
  • marriage license
  • passport
  • veterans' benefits
  • welfare aid
  • social security benefits
  • and many other purposes

Statistical information is compiled on the number and rate of births.   The following characteristics are used for demographic estimates:

  • place of birth
  • mother's place of residence
  • age of mother
  • plurality
  • birth rate

Death Certificates

A death certificate is the permanent legal record of the fact of death of an individual.   The death certificate provides important information about the decedent such as:

  • age
  • sex
  • race
  • date of death
  • parents of the deceased
  • marital status
  • spouse of the deceased
  • information on circumstances and cause of death
  • final disposition
