What Is A Firewall?
A firewall is a piece of hardware (similar to your PC) that is generally placed at an organization's connection to the Internet. The firewall examines the network traffic flowing into the organization from the Internet, and based on the configuration, will either allow the network traffic through or deny it.

By examining and filtering network traffic, the firewall can be used to protect the organization from illegitimate traffic, which may include network scans, hacks, etc.

It should be noted that a firewall does not provide complete protection for the network. The firewall is a component of the overall information security management plan.

More detailed information on firewalls can be found by clicking here.

Who Is Responsible For The Firewall?
Information Technology Services is responsible for firewalls on the UUHSC network's perimeters.

Network Operations is responsible for daily operations of the firewall (e.g. ensuring it is up and running and functional), including configuration changes once they have been approved by the Information Security Office.

The Information Security Office is responsible for designing the appropriate filters and configuration for the firewall and reviewing/approving changes to the firewall, as well as ensuring the design of the UUHSC's connection to campus complies with information security requirements (e.g. appropriate DMZ, etc.).

Requests for configuration changes should begin with the HSC Information Security Office.
