The staff nurse in the Medical Intensive Care Unit is challenged with caring for a diverse, highly critical patient population and their families. Approximately 25% of our patients are comprised of those with cardiovascular illnesses such as:

  • myocardial infarction
  • cardiomyopathy
  • pre-transplant
  • dysrythmias
  • and cardiogenic shock requiring IABP

The majority of our medical/pulmonary ICU patient population consists of those with

  • sepsis
  • ARDS
  • respiratory failure
  • multi-system failure
  • renal failure requiring CVVHD
  • or acute dialysis, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, diabetic emergencies
  • and critical obstetric complications.

Nurses on our unit also serve on the hospital Cardiac Arrest team.

Our Mission

The staff in the MICU/CCU focuses on a highly collaborative practice with physicians, nurses, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, social services, and PT/OT forming a team that cares for all aspects of our patients and their families.

As part of the patient care team, our nurses are required to attend daily rounds where our input is a valued part of patient care. Our team utilizes current research in our practice and participates in or formulates research to improve patient care.
