Health Professionals: Education Program

The Utah Poison Control Center provides clinical toxicology education to health professionals throughout the State of Utah in a variety of formats.

Weekly Case Conference:

The UPCC conducts a weekly case conference with poison center staff, interested University faculty, students, residents, fellows and other invited guests.

Clinical Toxicology Clerkships:

The UPCC serves as a training site for pharmacy students, medical students, emergency medicine residents, pediatric emergency medicine fellows, and pharmacy practice residents from the University of Utah, Primary Children's Medical Center, University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics and the VA Medical Center.

The rotation provides the trainee with experience in evaluating and monitoring poisoned patients treated in area hospitals, bedside consultations, case presentations at case conference and morning rounds and other educational activities at the UPCC. Trainees provide an in-service to poison center staff and contribute to the UPCC's professional newsletter, Toxicology Today.

Professional Outreach Program:

The professional outreach program includes the production of a quarterly newsletter on current poisoning topics that is distributed to health professionals throughout the state. Presentations on a variety of poisoning topics are offered to health professional groups throughout the state. Invitations for lectures or presentations on drug overdose, drug abuse, chemical exposures, envenomations, plant poisonings or other toxicology related topics are welcomed.

Clinical Toxicology Courses:

Two clinical toxicology courses are taught at the Health Sciences Center; one in the College of Pharmacy for third year professional students and one for the emergency medicine training program in the School of Medicine. Many of the UPCC staff participate in teaching these courses. Students learn about poison prevention education, assessment of the poisoned patient and the toxicity of common poisons.
