OIPRT Students Application Info


Students entering the Occupational Safety Engineering emphasis program are required to have a master’s degree in engineering, including four prerequisite courses that can be taken as part of the Ph.D. program (Ergonomics, Introduction to Industrial Safety, Introduction to Biostatistics, and Epidemiology, or equivalent). Students entering into the Occupational Injury Epidemiology emphasis program are required to have at least a bachelor’s degree, including four prerequisite courses that can be taken as part of the Ph.D. program (Introduction to Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Research Design, and Social Context of Medicine, or equivalent). Applicants to the Occupational Injury Epidemiology emphasis program usually have training in a science or health-related area.

To apply, please visit the University of Utah Graduate Admissions Website to obtain an application. Applicants to the Occupational Injury Epidemiology emphasis program should also visit the Public Health Program applicant website. Applicants to either emphasis program submit (1) transcripts of undergraduate and graduate coursework, (2) scores from the General Test of the GRE, (3) at least three letters of recommendation, and (4) a 1-2 page statement of background experiences and career goals. Applicants are interviewed by two members of the OIPRT program faculty and by two students from either the Mechanical Engineering or Public Health program (phone interviews accepted in some cases).
