Occupational Medicine Our Mission What is Occupational Medicine?
Occupational Medicine (OM) is the subspecialty of preventive medicine concerned with the health, safety, and performance of workers and their communities. OM specialists work in diverse settings that include clinics, medical centers, public health departments, corporate/industrial sites, academia, and independent consultation. Our Origin The RMCOEH OM program was established in 1977 as part of the University's original NIOSH Education and Research Center Grant. The residency program continues to operate in close cooperation with the other educational programs at the RMCOEH. It also has close ties with many entities at the University of Utah, including the Public Health Programs, College of Engineering, Health Research Center, Intermountain Injury Control Center, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the School of Medicine’s Departments of Family and Preventive Medicine (our home department), Internal Medicine, Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
