M.D./M.S.P.H. or M.D./M.P.H. Program
Two other combined degree programs are available to medical students. The combined M.D./M.S.P.H. (Master of Science in Public Health) or M.D./M.P.H. (Master of Public Health) degrees combine clinical training with the perspective and skills of public health and preventive medicine. The M.P.H. degree requires 45 credit hours of course work. The M.S.P.H. requires 55 credit hours of course work and is a research-based degree. Students who wish to pursue a joint M.D./M.P.H or M.D./M.S.P.H. degree must apply prior to June 30 after their second year in Medical School. Students are expected to take a Leave of Absence from medical school to complete the degree requirement. It is expected that part of the fourth year of medical school will be used to conduct research and write a required thesis or publishable paper for the M.S.P.H.
At least an additional year beyond the standard 4-year curriculum is required to complete these combined degree programs.
Application for a combined program can be declared when completing the AMCAS application. Subsequent acceptance into a combined program also is possible through application to the Graduate Program in Public Health with approval from the University of Utah School of Medicine Student Affairs Office. If applying to the University of Utah School of Medicine, the MCAT examination will be substituted in place of the Graduate Record Examination. Other Programs
The Department of Biomedical Informatics offers Ph.D. and M.S. degree programs, as well as a graduate Certificate in Biomedical Informatics. The department has a National Library of Medicine training grant in informatics that provides financial support for qualifying students.
As one of the largest informatics training programs in the country, our faculty and students have a broad range of experience and research interests. These research interests are divided into three general areas or tracks: Health Care/Clinical Informatics (including Medical Imaging), Clinical Research and Translational Informatics, and Public Health Informatics.
