Preparation for surgery
The following information is important for patients to know before surgery.
Before the surgery
- Adults cannot have anything to eat or drink after midnight on
the night before there surgery (this prevents vomiting during surgery)
- Outpatients should arrange to have have someone to drive you home
after the surgery
- Do not bring any children (other than the patient) or siblings
of young patients having surgery
- If you don't have a history of renal failure or other medical
reasons, drink plenty of fluids the day before surgery (especially water)
- Eat a light meal early in the evening the day before surgery
Medications
- Consult your doctor regarding what medications to take the day of
surgery (ex: insulin, blood pressure medication, anti coagulants,
vitamins, etc.)
- Bring a list of all medications to the hospital on the day of surgery
What to bring
- Some type of personal identification
- Insurance cards
- Medicare or Medicaid cards
- Any signed pre-authorization letters from your insurance or employer
- Advance directives, if applicable
Personal belongings
- Leave electric razors, radios, money, jewelry, credit cards and
valuables at home
- Leave personal belongings in the car
- Do bring reading material for the patient and family member
- Outpatients should wear loose fitting clothing
- Bring a favorite book, video or toys
- Bring a child's bottle, favorite drinking cup or favorite blanket
