The Heart Program
A Tradition of Excellence
The University of Utah has a long tradition of
excellence in the treatment of heart disease. As an early pioneer in artificial heart
technology, the University was among the first Medicare-approved centers for heart transplantation.
UTAH Cardiac
(Utah Transplant Affiliated Hospitals)
The University of Utah Hospital participates in UTAH Cardiac, which is one of the most successful collaborative Heart Transplant programs in the country. The UTAH Cardiac Transplant Program utilizes the specialized skills and resources of the four main Transplant Hospitals in Salt Lake City: University of Utah Hospital, VA Hospital, LDS Hospital and Primary Children’s Medical Center, to provide the highest level of clinical expertise to all patients with heart failure throughout the Intermountain West. The UTAH Cardiac Transplant program has one of the best survival rates in the country.
Expert Care
Our patients have access to a multidisciplinary team of health care professionals:
transplant cardiologists, surgeons, registered nurses, pharmacists, dieticians,
social workers, financial advisors, and support staff. The team has
extensive experience in all phases of care from initial evaluation through
post-operative follow-up.
Patient Education and Support
Our health care professionals collaborate to provide patient education and support. The multidisciplinary team members conduct a series of ongoing classes to educate patients and family members on the transplant experience. Patients and family can also join a support group, where they can freely exchange ideas and concerns in a more informal setting. The Future
Our nationally recognized specialists are actively involved in ongoing research in heart failure and transplantation.
The Referral Process
If your doctor recommends that you undergo a heart transplant evaluation, he or she will either fill out the confidential referral form and email it to us or contact our office directly by telephone. Your physician will send pertinent medical information regarding your condition. Once all information is received, the records will be reviewed by the transplant team. If it is determined that you could be a candidate for heart transplant, you will be scheduled for an initial clinic visit with the heart transplant team. Additional testing and appointments will be scheduled as needed for a full heart transplant evaluation. A full heart transplant evaluation requires approximately three days to complete. At the completion of the evaluation, a summary of all tests and a care plan will be shared with your referring physician.
