PLANNED FOR

Mine health and safety officers; training specialists; supervisors; foremen; operators; representatives from MSHA, unions and
mining association; and others interested in the prevention and management of alcohol and substance abuse in the mining workforce.


OBJECTIVES

Through lectures and multimedia presentations, participants will learn about the use, misuse, and abuse of alcohol and prescription, over-the-counter, and illegal drugs in the workplace.  Upon completion of the two-day Mining Industry Section, participants will 1) increase their awareness of how using alcohol and drugs before, during, and after the workday impacts the mining industry; 2) recognize the signs and symptoms of substance misuse and abuse that impact the work environment; 3) identify the core components of a comprehensive drug-free workplace program; 4) increase their awareness of the federal and state laws protecting the employer and employees in the context of drug testing, disciplinary actions, and personnel policies; and 5) develop an understanding of the types of treatment available and what to expect in the recovery process.
