Advance practice registered nurses (APRN), nurse
practitioners (NP) including all specialties (psychiatric, family, adult,
gerontology, pediatrics, woman's health and acute care) clinical nurse
specialists (CNS), certified nurse midwives (CNM), physicians assistants (PA),
baccalaureate and graduate nursing faculty, registered nurses (RN) and nursing
students with an interest in the prevention, recognition, and treatment of
alcoholism and other substance abuse of patients, clients or colleagues.

OBJECTIVES
(1) Articulate addiction as a brain illness. (2) Discuss the key components of motivational interviewing and outline a treatment plan that will facilitate change in patients and clients. (3) Describe the medical complications of addiction. (4) Investigate affective disorders and behavioral issues. (5) Discuss medications used in the treatment of substance abuse. (6) Express a value for personal power and self care. (7) Implement and evaluate drug testing. (8) Plan how to intervene with difficult and drug seeking patients. (9) Review new street drugs.
