When did the Newborn ICU start?
Dr. August Jung of University Hospital established the first newborn intensive care unit in the Intermountain West 34 year ago. In those early days, he outfitted his station wagon so he could pick up a sick baby and transport it to the unit. His staff sold doughnuts in the hospital to buy the first infant heart-rate monitor.
How do babies get to your nursery?
Now babies not only arrive by ambulance from the Wasatch front, they are flown in by University Hospital's 3 helicopters and 2 fixed wing aircraft from as far away as the Canadian border. Most babies are born in our hospital. The mothers are transported by the OB AIRMED team.
How are babies admitted to the Newborn ICU?
When the new labor and delivery unit was built 3 years ago, a window was built between the delivery room and the NICU so that a baby in distress can be passed right through the window immediately into the high-tech NICU.
