Providing support and information to families experiencing a high risk or threatened pregnancy, or who have a critially ill newborn in the Newborn ICU.
Parent to Parent offers many services to the University of Utah Hospital and the surrounding communities. Most of those services are listed below and are currently provided at no cost to the new families.
- One-on-one contact with a Graduate Parent, someone who has been through a similar experience in NICU. These visits are either in person or by phone.
- Parent Night - Guest speakers and discussion groups help families deal with their hospital experience. New families have the opportunity to talk to other parents currently going through the crisis, and to talk to Graduate Parents who have gone home, or graduated from the NICU. Scrapbook and calendar supplies are always available for families who choose to use them. Fourth week of each month dinner for NICU parents is provided. (Sign-up sheets are posted to get accurate dinner count of families choosing to attend.)
- Parent's Break Time - Held weekly in the Parent Lounge. Parents leave their baby's bedside during shift change. Snacks and juices are available. Parents are encouraged to relax, put their feet up and visit with one another. Guest speakers are invited to attend several times a month. Topics such as ROP, hearing screenings and car seat safety are discussed.
- Antepartum support- for families with a mom hospitalized with a high-risk or bedrest pregnancy. This support can be in person visits in the new mom's room, phone contact or via the internet. Weekly lunches are held for hospitalized moms to attend. New bedrest moms, the Parent Support Specialist, Parent to Parent volunteers and other Hospital staff provide information and support.
- Parent to Parent Update- Organizational newsletter is available on a quarterly basis. This publication is available to new families in the NICU and to in-hospital pregnancy patients as well as by mail. There is no charge to receive this publication.
- Presentation of the book Your Premature Baby and Child to families in NICU. These books are supplied to families through fundraising efforts or through donations to the Organization. This book answers many questions that new parents have on arrival to the NICU.
- Monthly Board and Membership meetings- Parent to Parent members, staff and new parents are invited to attend. These meetings are held once a month. Organizational activities are discussed and planned at this meeting.
- Gifts for NICU babies and moms on bedrest- provided for each holiday as a momento of their experience.
- Annual Reunions and events- A Reunion is held each Spring, as well as a Christmas Party in December. Also held is an Annual Awards Dinner (adults only) in our anniversary month. (March)
- Annual and ongoing fundraising projects- to provide books, videos and other Parent to Parent services.
- Sibling Coloring Books- available for all brothers and sisters of NICU babies. Helps the siblings understand what is happening to their new brother or sister, and to their family. (Available in Spanish)
- Parent to Parent Brochure- given to each family upon admission. Informs families about services provided. Also given at inservices in communities.
- Scrapbook & Calendar Supplies - Furnished, for use at Parent Night. Donated by local scrapbook company and individual donors
- Providing burial clothing and blankets to families that experience a loss in our Hospital. These items are provided at no cost to any family that wishes to have them.
- Providing a Preemie Purple Heart - Given to each family that experiences a loss in our Newborn ICU. (keepsake with story)
- Staff Newsletter- A newsletter for NICU staff. Informs staff about Parent to Parent. Tells them of upcoming events, and highlights a staff member each issue.
- Networking and referrals to other agencies and organizations in the community and in the nation.
- Parent Library- Current books, magazines and other publications appropriate for NICU families and for bedrest patients are available to loan from the Parent to Parent office. Scrapbook of NICU experiences is also available for families to review.
- Parent Lounge- Furnished through fundraisers. Parents can relax and have lunch. A Graduate Scrapbook, P to P Newsletters, books, articles and magazines are available.

Parent to Parent is there to listen. We have all once gone through the high-risk experiences of the new parents in our Hospital. Some have been bedrest patients, some have had critically ill and/or premature babies, some have done both. We understand your fears and your joys... we have been there, and we want to help.
